Green Valley Member-Guest, Operation Olive Branch, and OTHER STUFF!

I added the "and OTHER STUFF" as an homage to, what I consider to be, the lamest sports writer in the country. I won't mention his name, but he just fell bassackwards in to being a reporter in, arguably, the best sports city in the USA, Boston. The guy's awful, and that he's going to Boston is a travesty along the lines of Billy Bob Thornton & Angelina Jolie, Sasha Baron Cohen & Isla Fisher, and Brian Austin "David Silver" Green & Vanessa Marcil, Megan Fox, et al. It's aggravating and frustrating and I'll never understand it.

On to some other odds and ends. I received a good report from the Green Valley Member-Guest that was held last month. The reports were so full of mutual respect and admiration, two things that rarely - if ever - appear on this site, that I thought I would pass the emails along in their slightly edited form. Enjoy.

From Skibo:
Let me start out by saying the Hawk brothers are fine outstanding gentlemen of the game and it was an honor and a privilege to be able to play in their golfing tournament this weekend. Also, the newly renovated Men's Locker room is NIIIIIIICE! I'm talkin' "Greystone" nice Jim. By the way, they have a GOOD deal going on if you join RIGHT NOW.

Highlights:
1. We got a nice shirt and hat

2. Drinks and food were FREE (all inclusive)

3. Lots of hot womenz at the Friday night Dinner Party

4. Boogie is always happy

5. Had some nice cordial conversations with KCGreat over the course of the weekend (none of which had to do with the Kiva Cup)

6. Kevin Halcomb is not a fan of one great Family and W.A. Berry man Stan White

7. KCGreat and The Dr. finished 3rd or 4th (I don't remember exactly)in the 1st Flight.

8. From what I can tell the 1st Flight is not where you want to be. They got jackhammered in their last match 2-8.

9. Kevin Halcomb and Mark Skiba came in 3rd in the 2nd Flight which earned them $0. Overall we played decent, better than our handicaps but just caught some bad breaks and the wrong end of the draw in a couple matches. When you shoot best ball net 30 and lose, and in another match one of your opponents shoots a gross 32 on his own ball, well it's probably not going to be your week.

10. Brian Burnett and Sean Halcomb were GRAND CHAMPIONS of the 3rd Flight earning $250 in GVCC Pro Shop credit. Rumor has it there were some competitors in the Flight who were none too happy with Mr. Burnett. Making 3 natural birdies in a 9 hole match playing as a 12 handicap is no way to make friends.

11. By winning their flight Burnett and Halcomb earned a spot in the GRAND FINALE SHOOTOUT where the winners of each flight plus one WILDCARD team all playoff in a 20 man death match. Format - modified alternate shot; all players tee off, pick the best tee shot from your team and play the hole out in alternate shot. Teams are eliminated after each hole and if there are ties there is a CHIP OFF. And teams get their handicap strokes.

A. Shootout starts on Hole #1 and yes there are 20 tee shots - we playin' a twentysome Jim!!!

B. Sean hits a perfect tee shot, baby fade down the middle right in front of the creek. Brian hits a good 2nd shot right in the middle of the green 50 feet below the hole (pin was in the back). You want to be below this particular hole. Sean hits perfect lag putt leaving it 6 inches below the hole. Brian makes putt for 4 net 3 (you have to putt out).

C. 2nd hole - Brian pulls his tee shot into the left trees never to be seen again. Sean hits his short right, just off the green in some light rough. Pin is in the back right. After debating for what seemed like hours over how to play the shot, Brian decides to PUTT from off the green. Kevin Halcomb did not agree with this decision at all. Brian knocks it to 12 inches. Sean makes the putt for par.

D. Par was not good enough on the 2nd hole however as this put them in a tie with 5 other teams and 2 had to be eliminated so it's off to the CHIP OFF. The team elected to have Brian "chip". The shot was to be played from a similar spot as to where the team had played their original 2nd shot on the hole but a little further off to the right in the collection area next to the green. One additional twist to the CHIP OFF is all competitors in the CHIP OFF who aren't currently chipping have to turn their backs as to not gain a competitive advantage from seeing the proper line, break or how well your other competitors are doing. The first couple competitors chip very well all within a couple feet. Brian's turn and he chooses to PUTT again. Kevin Halcomb really doesn't like this decision. And this time Kevin proved to be right as there was simply too much rough and ground to cover and the ball got hung up and never made it on the green. They are eliminated. Overall, great effort by this team and they have nothing to hang their heads about.

E. We didn't stay to see who ended up winning but don't be surprised if a former Auburn quarterback has another picture of himself hanging in the Grill.

Had a great time and thanks again to Kevin T. Halcomb for the invite.

Response from Captain Burnett:
In retrospect we should have had Sean chip. He had chipped well all weekend. I had visions of the "putt" I had against Jim at Dancing Rabbit that had to travel 20 feet down a ravine then back up another 10 feet before getting to the green.

I too want to thank the Hawk brothers for their hospitality. Jim that last group did not care for me telling them this is the "round of my life".

Response from Chappy:
Kevin and I had a blast as well and are looking forward to a couple more of you guys joining so we can bring more folks from the Kiva Cup to the Hoover Member-Guest.

Skiba forgot to mention the pre-tournament match between Hawk/ Skiba vs Chaplain/Brian. It was a hard fought sportsmanlike match that took 22 holes to decide with Hawk/Skiba victorious. It was said of the match in the Hoover Chronicle news by one opponent "This will be the toughest match either of us play for the rest of the weekend." This turned out to be very close to the truth.

Brian played fantastic and I had a fine sampling of different free beers during the weekend. The Best Beer Award goes to a beer I cracked open 7:45 Sunday morning, Coors Light. An honorable mention goes to the Bud Light Lime which certainly knocked some heat off on those hot afternoons.

Brian, Great Call on the Iced Towels you brought. My hair was a little stiff after using these though. Did you pull these from you secret closet?

BTW, Stan White did not win as he and his partner 3 putted #4. Scott McGee and his partner went on to win.

Response from Gentleman Hawk Halcomb:
Truly a great event. Fun was had by everyone (except when Skiba and I when we got shell shocked by a 32 shot by a man with the craziest set up I've ever seen).

One point of clarification. I will admit to questioning the putter choice twice. The first time I questioned I was made to look a fool. I do not, however, want it to go unnoticed that one Mark Skiba was equally in shock. I think his quote was "What do you think Johnny Miller would be saying right now?"

Seriously, great playing to the Burnett/Halcomb team. It was a great showing and once again added additional weight to the argument "Why has a Halcomb not ever played in a Memorial Cup?"

Response from Captain Jim:
I wonder if sportsmanship will be the norm at this year's True.

Let's not get too carried away, Jim.

Update on Operation Olive Branch

Operation Olive Branch is currently underway. Early reports are it's not going so well. An updated report and final decision as to the future direction of Team USA is expected early next week.

That is all.
