80 Days and Counting....

Only eighty days until the 2010 Kiva Cup. 8-0 d-a-y-s. Or, more importantly, we only have seven Alabama victories and five GHIN revisions before we tee ‘em up on #1!

The inactivity on this site notwithstanding, there is a lot going on right now behind the scenes. While Team USA searches for an 8th player, Team Europe is holding interviews and try outs for their 8th spot.

When asked if he was concerned about Team USA’s inability to find an 8th man, Captain Jim responded rather abruptly, “what concerns me the most RIGHT NOW is these San Jose State Sharks. This whole season could be destroyed if we get caught looking past the Tarkanians and focus on the visit from JoePa the following week. 2010 is the year that we’re SUPPOSED to be good, but we’ve got to take it one game at a time relative to the schedule that we play and the opponents that we must prepare for in order to be a champion both on and off the field and excel and succeed in life first, and football teaches that lesson relative to its preparedness both mental and physical and emotional and psychological and relative to its competition with your opponent and winning in all areas of the game. So.”

He’s been hanging with Coach Saban.

European Captain Burnett has taken a more methodical approach to filling Team Europe’s 8th spot.

“Well, it [the process of finding an 8th] started when Hawk played in the qualifier at Willow Point. He scouted the field for us and identified a couple of players that we wanted to invite to try out”, Burnett explained. “What we need is someone to complement Hawk so that Team USA can’t just focus on him. We’ve invited a couple of folks from the qualifier, a few club pros, and about 6 club champions to battle in a flighted format for the 8th spot. We should be okay.”

Lodging arrangements are still being finalized. That’s all that I care to say about that.

Now to golf, I’m sure that others have played golf, but no one will send in a report, so I am left to report on how I played this past weekend.

Joined by Team Jackson and Cousin Taybo, I played at the Country Club of East Birmingham this past Saturday. I played awful. I’m still off plane, and out of tempo, which results in some wicked pulling of my irons. The dreaded toe-hook off the tee has also returned. It’s bad. I wasn’t really feeling it Saturday. I was feeling a little rushed and didn’t warm-up enough. I felt rushed on the course, and I also felt out of sorts from my grip to my alignment to my take away. And EAST is just in my head. I don't play well there, and they leave grass clippings everywhere and it's just never good when I play there. Any way…here are the stats. Hide the women and children.

Tees Played – White (68.8/126)
Drives in the Fairway – 3
Greens in Regulation – 3
Number of Putts – 35 (20-15)
Penalty Strokes – 3 (1-2)
Birdies – 0
Pars – 2 (#8 and #17)
Score – 99 (51-48)

On a bright note for Team USA, JRod was 2 for 3 in sand saves, a stat that surely riles European Captain Burnett who has declared bunker play the weakest part of JRod’s game.

Now, if Big Joe Yarbrough and Coach Ronald Joe can’t get the crows feet out of the greens at EAST, they are going to lose that golf course. As KCGreat has said, “if you don’t have greens, you don’t have a golf course”. That is by no means an excuse for my poor play, it was just one more to think about on the greens. You have to think about speed, line, and you have to account for the complete unknown of what will happen to your ball when it hits that third patch of crows feet that you have to putt through. Employing the automatic two putt rule would not be out of line for any round played on that course right now.

Lastly, Chris saw a monkey squirrel!
