A Cup of Chatter with Kevin The Hawk

Good afternoon, Kevin.
Roll Tide.

Are you ready for Kiva Cup 2008?
I reckon so.

How are you preparing?
Mostly by dirt bike racing.

You and your brother, the other Hawk, seem to come to Kiva with specific ideas about how to play. Last year, you came in hitting 3-iron off the tee to take the wind out of play. What is your strategy for this year?
First off Sean is not Hawk. I am Hawk. Good Question on the club selection though. As you may know I have switched to the FT-5 9 degree driver with the neutral tour head and stiff shaft. This club change has helped me get control of my driver. I do though reserve the right to go back to the 3 blade when needed.

You’ve been described by Team USA, a team that does not pass out compliments freely, as a “consummate gentleman”. How does that make you feel?
I reckon its ok. My captain and I are often described as such.

We all know that you will come to Kiva ready to play, but what do you expect from Team USA this year?
I expect it to be a hard fought battle. In all honesty Team USA had their chance last year with our team having the lowest handicaps in recent history. With our handicaps trending upward, I’m only taking enough clothes to get through Saturday.

You’ve got a new member on Team Europe this year. How will that affect the team dynamic?
Boogie gets along great with all members of the team that he has met. He is a streaky golfer. I have seen him shoot some truly unbelievable rounds given his handicap.

What are you talking about? The man has a 7 handicap, he plays at least once a week, and he hasn’t shot above 89 all year and he’s only done that twice! Half of Team USA hasn’t seen an 89 since we flipped the calendar to 1990.
I know. I was just trying to give Team USA some false hope.

Do you expect this new member to help you clean-up Casa B by the Sea on Sunday?
I would hope so. I like to get up early and get a head start on the cleaning. Sometimes I bring my own mop, dust pan, and whatnot.

There’s a rumor that at the Make a Few Bets Cup in Choctaw, Mississippi this past May, you were on the floor moonwalking to Billie Jean. Any chance we can get an encore of that performance at Tacky Jack’s 2?
Doubtful. There were two elements to that night that made the moonwalk possible. Black band and black women. Tacky Jacks 2 has lacked both every time I have been there. Plus Jim takes control of the jukebox and puts Warren Zevon’s greatest hits on repeat.

I’ll ask this because you are a financial type. With the dollar weakening, how much will it take to get you to eat a packet of mayonnaise this year?
Thirty dollars or five yen.

Does winning the Kiva Cup so handily ever get boring?
Not really. Captain Brian does a good job of keeping me motivated. He constantly reminds me of the things that a junior member of Team USA said about my mother. That erases any feeling of sympathy I may start having for the other team.

Thanks for your time, Kevin.
Not a problem.

The man is sportsmanlike, I've always maintained that.
